Hi all,

I have been a galaxy owner for a year now and really happy until now.

I have a 99 tdi Zetec model and since boxing day I haven't been able to start it.

I went out to the car boxing day morning ready to go to my parents, but it wouldn't start. I had to eventually get it started by jump starting it. Once started I got the family in the car and set on my way. After a while it seemed to lose power. I pulled over switched it off and restarted, It would then rev up as normal so we set off again. A short while after it happened again. So we stopped again restarted it again and off we went. It continued to happen time after time and it seemed to be running and revving up fine until the revs dropped under 2300. Also when it lost power there was a cloud of smoke coming from the exhaust and when it finally revved up again it didn't smoke at all.

I finally got to my parents and stopped the car. When I returned to the car it wouldn't start and hasn't since.

Now when I turn it over there is smoke coming from the exhaust as though it is getting fuel but not igniting. I have changed the fuel filter as I thought this could be blocked but sill no joy. I have borrowed my mates diagnostic machine and it came up with a few faults one of which was "injector start valve N108 shorting to ground intermitent" I have been to ford and asked about a injector start valve and they looked at me blankley. The only two parts that are available are the fuel cut off valve and the solinoid valve.

I have run a new power feed to the cut off switch which seems to click as if is working so now im stuck. I have cracked the pipes on the injectors and fuel is coming through but it still wont start.

Can anybody help me ???????????

Thanks for your time reading this

The N108 is responsible for advancing the fuel injection pump thats why ford dont know it as its on the pump itself, my thoughts is that you need to get vagcom onto it with engine running and check the timing, i think you;; find your pump timing way out, this is caused by the belt jumping or the crank sprocket moved or at worst the pump is on its last legs at end of day DO NOT drive it as if the belt has slipped itll take out your valves which is more money

I have checked the timing belt as this was one of my fears and the timing is belt is still in the same position as when it was changed 6000 miles ago when I got the car. I am thinking now that it could be the pump that is dud. It seems to nearly start if you crank it for a while but then doesn't run. Hmmm I think i will look into getting a second hand pump and see how it goes.

Thanks

I took the battery off to charge it and went to the breakers for a new pump. Got the pump ready to fit but then thought I would try it one last time and would you believe it started up no problem. I started it about ten times without problem.

Now it wont start again.

How sensitive are these galaxy's to having low batteries?

the injector start valve , i may be wrong but it rings a bell about a similar thing i had a few years ago, look at the 4 injectors and you will see one off them looks different to the others, like a things on top of it with a wire connector on it, check the wiring and plug, if you disconnect it, it will run extremely poorly, i think its also called the needle lift sensor, i may have them muddled up but its worth a try. it will show on the injector section on the ford parts diagram or vw which may be cheaper.

lift sensor is on injector 2 from gearbox side, engines like approx 250rpm to start, have a look at rev ctr see what its cranking at, if it dont start recharge bat see what happens

:) This thread sounds depressingly again as if its another owner in need of a new battery.

Winter is a common time for batteries to start dying.

I have changed the battery but still no joy. I have also changed the injector pump and now it has good fuel pressure but guess what it still wont start :46:

i still reckon its your timing, if i was near you id sort it out. did you do the timing exactly as the instructions. pump dont need coding up as its the ecu that does the graft.

had a thought as you seem capable of doing stuff take out one of your injectors if you can they get stuck in place so take care.slacken the pipe off and twist it about so you can reconnect injector and give it a crank see if you get a nice spray of derv out of it. just coz you get derv out of pipe when cracked doesnt mean its got pressure for injector to open

I dont know about the battery senstivity of the Galaxies

But Mates I have what I call the strangest problem with my Galaxy 2.3Lx on an 02 plate.

I parked it on Thursday evening, tried to start on Monday Morning, Everything seems to work fine including starter moter turn the engine make starting noise but long ingnitions and it dont start.

Everything seems to work ok no warning lights, battery seems fine otherwise it will not start the starer motor, I hope someone out on this forum have some idea to what it is?

Cheers
